About Engineer in the Classroom

Our Mission

Bring engineers to students; provide hands-on experience introducing the next generation to the many aspects of engineering careers.

What We Do

The Engineer in the Classroom is an award winning education outreach program  that was started in 2000 designed to put Engineers in 5th grade classrooms and present the varied aspects of engineering as a career. We are currently in five different districts across Illinois, Champaign, Decatur, Paris, Peoria and Springfield.  Last year we had our first Indiana District.

We would love to see this vision grow across not only Illinois, but across the country!

Our Goals

  • Provide students with an understanding of engineering and what engineers do.

  • Introduce some of the simple engineering principles that are incorporated in our day-to-day lives.

  • Review some of the outstanding engineering accomplishments of the past.

  • Introduce the students to the “business of engineering”.

  • Talk about educational interests and opportunities for students.

  • Turn the class into an engineering team that conceives, designs, builds, tests, and perfects a mechanical device made out of stuff brought from home.

  • Provide a fun and memorable experience through showcasing the team’s mechanical device in a showcase with other teams.
